Chasin’ You
Morgan Wallen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴We used to chase that Chattanooga freight
Couple of kids in a Chevrolet
Catch a little air when we cross the tracks
Sippin' on somethin' from a paper sack
You hang your shirt on that maple limb
Slippin' through the moon to the river bend
Wasn't very long I was jumpin' in, jumpin' in
I guess I'm still doin' now what I was doin' then
Chasin' you like a shot of whiskey
Burning going down, burning going down
Chasin' you like those goodbye taillights
Headed west to anywhere out of this nowhere town
Chasin' that freedom, chasin' that feeling that got gone too soon
Chasin' that you and me, I only see in my rear view
Hell, I'm layin' here tonight holdin' someone new
Still chasin' you, still chasin' you

You always used to talk about LA
I heard you got as far as Santa Fe
Well, you know I tried to track you down
I only got as far as get Guitar Town
Singin' about a girl I used to know, used to know
Well, you should know that I haven't given up
I'm just on your radio

Chasin' you like a shot of whiskey
Burning going down, burning going down
Chasin' you like those goodbye taillights
Headed west to anywhere out of this nowhere town
Chasin' that freedom, chasin' that feeling that got gone too soon
Chasin' that you and me, I only see in my rear view
Hell, I'm layin' here tonight holding someone new
Still chasin' you, still chasin' you

Chasin' you like a shot of whiskey

Chasin' you like those goodbye taillights
Headed west to anywhere out of this nowhere town
Chasin' that freedom, chasin' that feeling that got gone too soon

Overall Meaning

In "Chasin' You," Morgan Wallen sings about memories of a past relationship and his persistent feelings for his ex. The song opens with nostalgic imagery of him and his ex as teenagers, joyriding in a Chevrolet and sipping on alcohol hidden in a paper sack. They would jump out of the car and onto the train tracks, taking risks and living in the moment. Wallen then sings about how he still feels the same way towards his ex as he did back then. He likens the feeling of chasing her to a shot of whiskey, burning and desperate. Wallen can't let go of his feelings for this girl, even though she left to chase her dreams in LA. Despite his attempts to find her, he has only gotten as far as singing about her on the radio. Wallen ends the song by declaring that he's still chasing her, even while holding onto someone new.

The central theme of "Chasin' You" is love that is hard to let go of. The lyrics are poignant because they reflect the struggle of many people who have tried to move on from a past relationship, but can't quite shake their feelings. Wallen's imagery of summer nights, alcohol, and risk-taking paint a vivid picture of youthful joy and spontaneity that can be hard to recapture as we get older. The metaphor of chasing a shot of whiskey also brings home the idea that love can be both exhilarating and painful at the same time.
